Supported Barcode Formats (Symbologies)
Different industries and use cases require specific barcode formats. Here is an overview of the standards supported by our generator:
CODE128 (Default)
General PurposeHighly dense, alphanumeric barcode symbology. Ideal for shipping labels, asset tracking, inventory, and logistics.
EAN-13 & EAN-8
International RetailUsed globally (especially outside North America) for marking consumer products at retail points-of-sale. Requires numeric digits.
UPC-A & UPC-E
North American RetailThe standard barcode format for retail items in North America. UPC-A encodes 12 digits; UPC-E is a compact 6-digit version.
CODE39 & ITF-14
Industrial & LogisticsCODE39 supports numbers, letters, and symbols. ITF-14 is a numeric-only format widely used on outer packaging and corrugated cartons.
Designing & Printing Barcode Labels
To ensure your printed barcodes can be easily scanned by mobile devices and hardware laser scanners, keep these best practices in mind:
- High Contrast: Always maintain a high contrast ratio between the bars (foreground) and the space (background). Black bars on a white background is the gold standard. Avoid pastel colors for barcode lines.
- Quiet Zone: Barcodes require clear margins (quiet zones) on the left and right sides. Scanners rely on this blank space to recognize the beginning and end of the code. Do not clip the margins.
- Print Resolution: Print barcodes using a laser printer or thermal label printer at 300 DPI or higher. Inkjet printers can sometimes bleed, making the bars fuzzy and unscannable.
- Scale & Dimensions: Do not make the width multiplier too thin (less than 1.5px per bar) if printing on standard paper, as it may cause individual bars to blur together.
